Tramping to DOC huts in Marlborough
Marlborough's 60 DOC huts are strikingly uniform. Every hut is either a standard hut (46) or a basic hut or bivvy (14); there are no serviced or Great Walk huts. Every listed adult rate is $10 a night. None of the huts must be booked through DOC, so they are all first come, first served.
The huts are small. Together they hold 335 bunks, and Rocks Hut in Mount Richmond Forest Park has the most at 16. Greigs Hut in the Leatham Conservation Area has 14, and Palmer Hut and Warden Hut in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence have 12 each. The rest sleep 10 or fewer.
Three areas tie for the most huts, with 16 each: Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence, the Leatham Conservation Area and Mount Richmond Forest Park. In the Clarence, Snowgrass Hut and Forbes Hut (previously Seymour Hut) have 10 bunks each and Mt Fyffe Hut has 8. The Leatham huts include Barbers Hut, Bottom Gordon Hut, Bottom Misery Hut and Caves Hut, all standard huts with 6 bunks. In Mount Richmond Forest Park, Lake Chalice Hut, Lower Goulter Hut, Mid Goulter Hut and Richmond Saddle Hut have 8 bunks each.
Of the 60, 13 are free and 47 carry a fee. Mattresses are close to universal, listed at 59 huts, and heating appears at 47. Gosling Hut in the Glazebrook Conservation Area is the odd one among the listed huts: a basic hut with 6 bunks, heating and stream water but no mattresses listed, and a fee shown without a rate. Stream water is the supply at 35 huts in all, so treat or boil it.
