Tramping to DOC huts in Wellington/Kāpiti

Wellington/Kāpiti has 24 DOC huts with 243 bunks, in three main groups. Tararua Forest Park holds 15, the Catchpool Valley & Ōrongorongo Valley area 6, and the Ōtaki Forks area 3. The categories are 11 standard huts, 7 basic huts or bivvies and 6 serviced huts.

The 6 Ōrongorongo huts are the serviced ones, and 6 huts in the region must be booked through DOC. Turere Lodge has the most bunks with 32, Raukawa Lodge has 14, Haurangi Hut and Papatahi Hut 10, Jans Hut 9 and Boar Inn 4. Each shows a fee but no rate in the data, which is why the only adult rate listed for the region is $10. Raukawa Lodge is the region's one hut with flush toilets, and Turere Lodge, Haurangi Hut, Papatahi Hut and Jans Hut list cooking facilities.

That $10 rate applies at the standard huts. In the Ōtaki Forks area, Field Hut has 20 bunks, Parawai Lodge 18 and Waitewaewae Hut 16. In Tararua Forest Park, Te Matawai Hut and Waiopehu Hut have 18 bunks and Mangahao Flats Hut 16. South Ohau Hut has 10, and Kapakapanui Hut, Penn Creek Hut and Anderson Memorial Hut have 6 each.

The 7 free huts are all small. Burn Hut, Renata Hut, North Ohau Hut and Waiotauru Hut have 4 to 6 bunks, while Aokaparangi Hut, Dracophyllum Hut and North Mangahao Bivvy have just 2. Several of them have no heating listed, and Waiotauru Hut and North Mangahao Bivvy take their water from a stream.

Across all 24 huts, 17 list heating and 22 list mattresses. Stream water is the source at only 3 huts; treat or boil it there. The data places just 2 huts within 3 hours of a road, and DOC has 3 campsites in Wellington/Kāpiti.
