Tramping to DOC huts in Canterbury

Canterbury has 180 DOC huts with 1,155 bunks between them, and the bulk of them are simple shelters. Basic huts and bivvies account for 108, standard huts for 47, serviced huts for 16 and serviced alpine huts for 9. Carrington Hut in Arthur's Pass National Park has the most bunks at 36, a serviced hut charging adults $25 a night with heating and mattresses.

Free and paid huts are close to even here: 92 cost nothing and 84 carry a fee. Adult rates in the data run from $10 to $55 a night. The top of that range is Mueller Hut, a serviced alpine hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park with 28 bunks at $55. Plateau Hut in the same park sleeps 33, with a fee but no rate in the data. Woolshed Creek Hut in Hakatere Conservation Park lists $12.50 to $35 for its 26 bunks, while Goat Pass Hut and Crow Hut in Arthur's Pass National Park are standard huts at $10. Just 13 huts must be booked through DOC, so most are first come, first served.

Lake Sumner Forest Park holds the most huts with 26, ahead of Arthur's Pass National Park on 22 and the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers area on 20. In Lake Sumner Forest Park, Hope Kiwi Lodge is a serviced hut with 20 bunks, and Hurunui Hut sleeps 15 for $10. Anne Hut, Boyle Flat Hut and Christopher Hut in the St James Conservation Area are serviced huts listed at $10 to $25.

Heating is listed at 117 huts and mattresses at 140, so not every hut has them. Water comes from a stream at 108 huts, which means carrying a way to treat or boil it. Only 14 huts are listed as within 3 hours of a road, and 5 are marked closed in the data, so check a hut's status before you walk in. DOC also runs 22 campsites in the region, covered on their own page.
