Tramping to DOC huts in Nelson/Tasman
Nelson/Tasman has 99 DOC huts and 1,046 bunks, with two national parks holding most of them: Kahurangi National Park has 45 huts and Nelson Lakes National Park 24. Mount Richmond Forest Park adds 10. The mix is 50 standard huts, 25 basic huts or bivvies, 14 serviced huts and 10 Great Walk huts.
The listed Great Walk huts are in Abel Tasman National Park and Kahurangi National Park. Anchorage Hut and Bark Bay Hut in Abel Tasman National Park have 34 bunks each, the most in the region, and Awaroa Hut has 26. Their adult rates are $33 to $55 a night for NZ residents and $33 to $84 for international visitors, the top of the region's $10 to $84 range. In Kahurangi, Heaphy Hut has 32 bunks and James Mackay Hut and Perry Saddle Hut have 28, at $30 to $44 for residents and $30 to $66 for international visitors. All 7 huts with flush toilets are Great Walk huts.
Nelson Lakes National Park holds many of the serviced huts. Sabine Hut has 32 bunks, West Sabine Hut 30, Lakehead Hut 28, John Tait Hut 27 and Upper Travers Hut 24, all at $10 to $25 for adults. Angelus Hut has 28 bunks at $30. George Lyon Hut is a standard hut there with 16 bunks at $10.
Kahurangi has larger standard huts too. Kahurangi Keepers house sleeps 25, Karamea Bend Hut 22 and Kings Creek Hut 20, each at $10, and Salisbury Lodge is a serviced hut with 22 bunks at $25.
On fees, 25 huts are free and 73 charge, and 19 must be booked through DOC. Heating features at 86 huts and mattresses at 96, while 45 rely on stream water that needs treating or boiling.
