Tramping to DOC huts in Hawke's Bay
Hawke's Bay's DOC huts sit almost entirely in two forest parks: Kaweka Forest Park with 29 and Ruahine Forest Park with 25, out of 55 in the region. They are mostly small. The 55 huts share 328 bunks, and the categories are 33 standard huts, 19 basic huts or bivvies and just 3 serviced huts.
Many of the standard huts have 6 bunks and charge adults $10 a night. In Kaweka Forest Park that includes Cameron Hut, Harkness Hut, Makino Hut, Manson Hut and Middle Hill Hut; in Ruahine Forest Park, Dead Dog Hut and Kiritaki Hut. A step up in size, Daphne Hut and Triplex Hut in the Ruahine have 12 bunks each at the same $10 rate, as does Venison Tops Hut (Tira Lodge) in the Kaweka.
The 3 serviced huts include the two biggest. Te Puia Hut (Lodge) in Kaweka Forest Park has the most bunks with 26, at $25 for adults. Sunrise Hut in Ruahine Forest Park sleeps 20 and lists $25 to $30, the top of the region's $10 to $30 range, and Longview Hut has 12 bunks at $25. Only 2 huts must be booked through DOC, so nearly all are first come, first served.
Free huts number 17, against 36 with a fee. Awatere Hut and Dianes Hut in Ruahine Forest Park are free basic huts with 6 bunks each, both with heating and mattresses. Across all 55 huts, 40 have heating and 49 have mattresses. At 22 huts the water is from a stream, so carry a way to treat or boil it.
None of the huts here is listed as within 3 hours of a road. For tent nights, Hawke's Bay has 7 DOC campsites.
