Tramping to DOC huts in Central North Island
Only one of the 16 DOC huts in the Central North Island is free: Ten Man Hut, a basic hut with 8 bunks in the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area. The other 15 charge a fee. Together the huts hold 228 bunks, and the categories are spread fairly evenly, with 6 serviced huts, 5 standard huts, 3 Great Walk huts and 2 basic huts or bivvies.
Tongariro National Park holds 10 of the huts, including all 3 Great Walk huts. Waihohonu Hut has the most bunks in the region at 28, followed by Oturere Hut with 26 and Mangatepopo Hut with 20. Their adult rates are split by residency: $25 to $44 a night for NZ residents and $25 to $66 for international visitors, which is where the region's top rate of $66 comes from. The serviced huts in the park, among them Rangipo Hut, Blyth Hut, Mangaehuehu Hut and Whakapapaiti Hut, charge adults $25, and Lupton Hut is a standard hut with 8 bunks at $15.
Kaimanawa Forest Park has 4 huts. Boyd Hut is the serviced one, with 16 bunks at $25. Oamaru Hut and Waipakihi Hut are standard huts with 12 bunks each at $10, and Cascade Hut sleeps 6 at the same rate. Zekes Hut is the single hut in Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary, a standard hut with 4 bunks at $10.
Facilities are consistent across the region. Heating is listed at 15 of the 16 huts and mattresses at all 16. DOC requires bookings at 5 huts, and 4 are listed as within 3 hours of a road. Adult rates across the paid huts run from $10 to $66. If a hut night is not what you need, DOC runs 14 campsites in the region as well.
