Tramping to DOC huts in Wairarapa
Most of Wairarapa's 36 DOC huts are in Tararua Forest Park, which holds 23 of them. Aorangi Forest Park has 6 and the Holdsworth area 3. Standard huts make up 26 of the total, with 7 basic huts or bivvies and 3 serviced huts, and together they hold 349 bunks.
The Holdsworth area has only 3 huts but some of the biggest. Powell Hut has the most bunks in the region with 32, a serviced hut at $25 to $30 for adults, the top of the region's $10 to $30 range. Atiwhakatu Hut has 26 bunks at $10 to $15, and Jumbo Hut, also serviced, has 20 at $25. Powell Hut and Jumbo Hut both list cooking facilities.
In Tararua Forest Park, Totara Flats Hut is the serviced hut, with 26 bunks at $25. Alpha Hut and Tutuwai Hut have 20 bunks each at $10, Tarn Ridge Hut 16 and Mitre Flats Hut 14. Maungahuka Hut and Dundas Hut list mattresses and untreated tap water but no heating. Carkeek Hut, Dorset Ridge Hut, Neill Forks Hut and Nichols Hut are 6-bunk standard huts at $10. Cone Hut is a free basic hut with 6 bunks, heating and stream water.
