Tramping to DOC huts in East Coast
Of the 38 DOC huts on the East Coast, 11 are marked closed in the data, so a hut's current status is the first thing to confirm. Between them the 38 huts hold 403 bunks, and every one of them lists both heating and mattresses. Standard huts dominate with 28, alongside 5 basic huts or bivvies, 4 Great Walk huts and a single serviced hut.
Te Urewera holds 16 huts, including all 4 Great Walk huts and the region's largest. Waiharuru Hut has 40 bunks, Panekire Hut 36, Waiopaoa Hut 30 and Marauiti Hut 26. The data shows a fee for each of them but no rate, so the listed adult range of $10 to $25 does not cover them. Sandy Bay Hut, also in Te Urewera, is the one serviced hut, with 18 bunks and no fee listed.
Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park has 10 huts, almost all standard huts at $10 a night. Central Whirinaki Hut is the biggest there with 25 bunks and a $10 to $25 rate, Central Te Hoe Hut sleeps 15, and Mangamate Hut, Moerangi Hut and Upper Whirinaki Hut have 9 bunks each.
Only 4 huts are free. Manganuku Hut in the Ōpōtiki area is one, a basic hut with 6 bunks and water from a stream; Mangakirikiri Hut in Raukumara Conservation Park is another. The rest of the Ōpōtiki area's 5 huts include Kotepato Hut, Nikau Flat Hut and Pakihi Hut, standard huts with 6 bunks at $10. Across the region 23 huts carry a fee.
DOC bookings are needed at 5 huts, 5 are listed as within 3 hours of a road, and 4 take their water from a stream, which should be treated or boiled first. The region's 14 DOC campsites have a page of their own.
