Tramping to DOC huts in Southland
Southland's 70 DOC huts lean heavily towards the basic end: 50 are basic huts or bivvies, 18 are standard huts and 2 are Great Walk huts. With 453 bunks in total, most huts are small, and North Arm Hut has the most at 24.
Rakiura National Park holds 30 of the huts, more than any other area in the region. North Arm Hut and Port William Hut are its 2 Great Walk huts, with 24 bunks each and adult rates of $31 to $44 a night for NZ residents and $31 to $66 for international visitors, the top of the region's $10 to $66 range. The park's standard huts charge $10: Mason Bay Hut has 20 bunks, and Bungaree Hut, Freshwater Hut and Yankee River Hut have 16 each. Freshwater Hut is the region's one hut with flush toilets.
Rakiura also has a run of small hunters huts, among them North Pegasus Hunters Hut, South Pegasus Hunters Hut, Kellys Hunters Hut and Hapuatuna Hunters Hut, basic huts with 6 to 8 bunks that show a fee but no rate. A total of 21 huts in the region must be booked through DOC.
The Eyre Mountains/Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park has 16 huts and the Takitimu Conservation Area 12. In the Eyre Mountains, Mt Bee Bunkrooms is a free basic hut with 8 bunks and untreated tap water, and Cromel Base Hut is free with 6 bunks and stream water. In the Takitimu, Aparima Hut is a standard hut with 12 bunks at $10. Army Hut in the Snowdon Forest Conservation Area is free with 6 bunks.
Southland splits 27 free huts against 37 paid ones. Most huts list heating (57) and mattresses (63). Stream water supplies 27 huts; boil or treat it before drinking. Only 5 huts in the region appear in the data as within 3 hours of a road, and DOC campsites are few too, with 5 in Southland.
