Tramping to DOC huts in Fiordland
Fiordland National Park contains 53 of the region's 55 DOC huts, with one more in the Doubtful Sound/Patea area and one in the Southern fiords area. The huts hold 764 bunks in total, and a large share of them sit in the 7 Great Walk huts. Luxmore Hut has the most at 54, Iris Burn Hut and Lake Mackenzie Hut have 50 each, and Clinton Hut, Dumpling Hut, Mintaro Hut and Moturau Hut have 40 each.
Those Great Walk huts are also the region's 7 with flush toilets, and their rates are set by residency. Luxmore Hut lists $35 to $88 a night for NZ residents and $35 to $132 for international visitors. Clinton Hut, Dumpling Hut and Mintaro Hut list $30 to $106 for residents and $30 to $152 for international visitors, the top of Fiordland's $10 to $152 adult range. All told, 7 huts must be booked through DOC.
Away from the Great Walk huts, the picture changes. Standard huts are the largest group with 28, mostly 12-bunk huts at $10 for adults: Green Lake Hut, Hope Arm Hut, Kintail Hut, Loch Maree Hut and Supper Cove Hut are all listed that way. The 6 serviced huts include Lake Alabaster Hut with 26 bunks and Martins Bay Hut with 24, both at $10 to $25, and Port Craig School Hut with 20 bunks at $25.
There are 14 basic huts or bivvies and 14 free huts, against 41 that charge. 47 huts list heating and 50 list mattresses. A stream is the water supply at 12 huts, so plan to treat or boil it there. Just 4 huts are listed within 3 hours of a road. DOC's 13 campsites in Fiordland are covered separately.
