Camping with DOC in Otago

Otago's 30 DOC campsites cover a wide price spread, from $5 to $42 a night for adults. The cheap end is the backcountry. Aspiring Campsite in the Matukituki Valley area is $5, with a non-flush toilet. Campsites at huts cost $10: Dart Campsite (near hut) and Shelter Rock in Mount Aspiring National Park, and Greenstone, McKellar and Mid Caples in the Greenstone and Caples Conservation Areas. All of these are reached on foot, and the hut campsites list flush toilets.

The top of the range is Routeburn Flats Campsite, the region's one Great Walk campsite, at $10 to $28 for NZ residents and $10 to $42 for international visitors. Mount Aspiring National Park holds the most campsites, with 6, and also has Pleasant Flat Campsite, a roadside standard site at $15 with flush toilets and a cooking shelter.

For campervans, 17 campsites list access. Around Queenstown and Glenorchy, Twelve Mile Delta Campsite is the largest, with 100 sites, at $18, with a boat ramp; Moke Lake, Sylvan and Kinloch are also $18, and Kinloch has a jetty. Kidds Bush Reserve Campsite in Hāwea Conservation Park and Cameron Flat in the Makarora area cost $15. Skippers Campsite is $10 but lists only 4WD and mountain bike access.

Of the 8 free campsites, Homestead Campsite in Oteake Conservation Park, Lindis Pass Historic Hotel Campsite and St Bathans Domain Campsite can be reached by campervan. Macetown Campsite is free but needs a 4WD, a bike or your feet, and Beach Point at Walter Peak Campsite is reached on foot, by boat or by mountain bike.

Dogs are allowed in some form at 12 campsites. Campfires are permitted at only 2, Tawanui and Purakaunui Bay in the Catlins coastal area. No campsite lists showers, powered sites or treated tap water. Of the 30, 16 are bookable online through DOC and 2 are marked closed. The region also has 78 DOC huts.
