De directe rit is kort genoeg voor één dag, maar vier dagen laten een veel rijkere kust zien. Het plan geeft Picton de tijd om zich te vestigen na de veerboot, Kaikōura een volledig weervenster en North Canterbury een laatste late stop.
Picton en Marlborough
Haast u niet rechtstreeks van een late veerboot naar de kustweg. Gebruik Picton voor de eerste nacht, verken daarna de Sounds of reis na een goede nachtrust door Blenheim.
Kelderdeuren vereisen een sober rijplan en vele werken op basis van boeking of seizoensuren. Op een camping in de buurt van Blenheim of Renwick kan het voertuig blijven staan terwijl een rondleiding het transport afhandelt.
Twee nachten in Kaikōura
State Highway 1 wordt blootgesteld aan weersomstandigheden, uitglijden en incidentele afsluitingen. Controleer de route voordat u Marlborough verlaat en gebruik de afritten langs de kust alleen daar waar stoppen duidelijk veilig is.
Walvisreizen zijn afhankelijk van de omstandigheden op zee en kunnen worden verplaatst of geannuleerd. Twee nachten creëren een tweede kans, terwijl het wandelpad op het schiereiland, het bekijken van zeehonden en het lokale eten de vrije dag waardevol houden.
Einde van Noord-Canterbury
Waipara biedt een langzamere pauze vóór Christchurch, met stranden en kleine stadjes in de buurt. Houd het laatste daglicht licht als het rijden in een groot voertuig in de stad onbekend is.
Kies een camping in Christchurch op basis van de volgende taak: luchthaven, verhuurdepot, stadsbezoek of vertrek landinwaarts. De beste site is degene die een onnodige oversteek door de stad elimineert.
The coast road has been rebuilt and still moves
State Highway 1 between Picton and Christchurch was severely damaged in the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake and has been substantially rebuilt, but the coastal section remains prone to slips and closures in heavy rain. Check the NZTA status before committing to it rather than assuming it is open.
When it closes, the inland route via the Lewis Pass is the alternative and adds several hours. That is worth knowing before you book something time-critical at either end.
Kaikōura is a booking, not a drive-through
Whale watching, dolphin swimming and albatross trips all run to weather and all book out in season. The whales are resident year-round, which makes Kaikōura unusually reliable, but the sea state cancels trips regularly enough that a single-night stop is a gamble.
Stay two nights and book the trip for the first morning. That gives the operator a second window to reschedule you into rather than refunding you as you drive away.
The seal colony and the peninsula walk
The colony at Point Kean is free, accessible and busy with fur seals, and the peninsula walkway above it is one of the better short coastal walks in the country. Keep twenty metres back from the animals and never block their path to the water.
The walkway is tide-dependent on the shore route and unaffected on the clifftop route. Check the tide before choosing which way round, or you will be turning back.
Blenheim and the Waipara wineries
Marlborough around Blenheim is the country's largest wine region and most cellar doors are within a compact area, which makes a bicycle the sensible way to visit several. Waipara, closer to Christchurch, is smaller, quieter and often more interesting for a single stop.
If the itinerary only allows one wine stop, Waipara fits the route better on this drive and does not require a detour off the highway. Marlborough deserves its own day rather than a rushed afternoon.
Queen Charlotte Drive and the Sounds
The road from Picton to Havelock is only 35 kilometres and takes the better part of an hour, with continuous corners, narrow sections and viewpoints worth stopping at. It is the better alternative to the direct highway if you have the time, and a poor choice at dusk when tired.
Anakiwa at the end of the Queen Charlotte Track and the campsites around Momorangi Bay put you on the water and make a good first South Island night. Water taxis from Picton open up the walking track without committing to the full multi-day route.
If you are arriving on an evening sailing, stay in Picton rather than attempting this road in the dark. It is the kind of route where the scenery is the entire reason to take it.
Where to break the drive
Picton to Christchurch is comfortably done in two days with a night in Kaikoura, and uncomfortably in one. The direct run is around five hours before any stops, on a road with plenty worth stopping for.
Waipara and the Hurunui are the natural second break if you have three days, with wineries and the Hanmer Springs detour inland.
