Christchurch naar Lake Tekapo en Aoraki: een 5-daagse roadtrip

Steek de Canterbury Plains over

Koop speciaal voedsel, brandstof en uitrusting in Christchurch en gebruik vervolgens Geraldine voor een ontspannen eerste pauze. Sterke noordwestenwinden kunnen hoge voertuigen beïnvloeden nog voordat de bergen verschijnen.

Lake Tekapo vult zich snel in het hoogseizoen. Boek de legale overnachtingsplaats in plaats van aan te nemen dat kamperen in een leeg gebied aan het meer mogelijk is, en bescherm de donkere luchtomgeving door het licht laag te houden.

Tekapo naar Aoraki

Volg Lake Pūkaki alleen naar het noorden nadat u de Aoraki-weg en parkeerwaarschuwingen heeft gecontroleerd. Het uitzicht moedigt frequente stops aan, maar gebruik gevormde afritten en laat de rijstroken vrij.

Het weer in Aoraki verandert snel en populaire wandelingen kunnen gesloten zijn vanwege wind-, lawine- of overstromingsrisico. Begin vroeg, draag laagjes en kies voor een korte wandeling door het dal als de weersvoorspellingen in de Alpen omslaan.

Twizel en de terugkeer

Twizel zorgt voor brandstof, boodschappen en een beschut alternatief voor de blootgestelde bovenste vallei. Het is ook een verstandige plek om na een lange wandeling een herstelnacht toe te voegen.

Keer terug via Fairlie of ga alleen verder richting Wānaka met een realistische rijdag. Het landschap maakt vermoeidheid, zijwind of huurterugkeertijden niet minder reëel.

The Mackenzie is a dark sky reserve

The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve covers Tekapo, Twizel and the Aoraki area, and the night sky here is among the best accessible anywhere. Lighting is restricted throughout the reserve, which is why the stars are as good as they are.

Use a red torch, keep vehicle headlights off where you can, and give your eyes twenty minutes to adapt properly. A phone screen at full brightness undoes that for everyone around you.

Tekapo is beautiful and extremely busy

The Church of the Good Shepherd is one of the most photographed buildings in the country and the coach traffic reflects that. Early morning and late evening are the only times it feels like the place in the photographs.

It is also an active church rather than a monument, and services take priority over photography. The lupins along the lakeshore, incidentally, are an invasive weed rather than a native feature, however good they look in November.

Aoraki weather and the Hooker Valley

The Hooker Valley Track is the standout short walk in the park: three hours return, largely flat, three swing bridges and a glacial lake at the end with the mountain above it. It is achievable for most people and worth timing for early light.

The weather at the village is not the weather in the valley, and wind funnels hard through it. Take a windproof layer even on a warm day, and check the forecast at the visitor centre rather than relying on a town forecast from Twizel.

Accommodation is concentrated and books out

Aoraki village has limited beds and the DOC campsite at White Horse Hill fills daily in summer. Twizel and Lake Pukaki have more options and are within reasonable driving distance, which makes them the practical base for most travellers.

Book ahead in summer without exception, and note that there is no supermarket at the village. Restock in Twizel or Fairlie before heading up the valley.

Geraldine, Fairlie and the approach

The inland route through Geraldine and Fairlie is the standard approach and both towns are worth a stop for supplies, with Fairlie being the last practical restock before Tekapo. The climb over Burkes Pass marks the transition into the Mackenzie and the change in landscape is abrupt.

Lake Pukaki's viewpoint on the way to Aoraki gives the classic view up the lake to the mountain, and the colour is genuinely as unnatural as the photographs suggest, caused by suspended glacial flour. Early morning is calmest and the reflections are best before the wind gets up.

The road into Aoraki village is a dead end, 55 kilometres each way from the highway. Factor the return into the day rather than treating it as a stop on the way somewhere, because there is no through route.

Hot pools and the wet-day option

Tekapo Springs and the pools at Omarama give you something to do when the weather closes in, which in the Mackenzie it does with little warning. Both are within easy reach of the main route.

The Mount John observatory tours are weather dependent and book out. If the forecast is clear on your first night, take it then rather than saving it.
