State Highway 73 is een overtocht die twee of drie dagen verdient. Castle Hill, Arthur's Pass Village en de Otira-afdaling belonen elk daglicht, terwijl sneeuw, wind en kea meer aandacht vergen dan de afstand alleen al doet vermoeden.
Canterbury-aanpak
Verlaat Christchurch nadat u de pasvoorspelling en de wegstatus heeft gecontroleerd. Stop alleen bij Castle Hill op de gevormde parkeerplaats en respecteer de culturele en natuurbeschermingsrichtlijnen tussen de kalksteenformaties.
Lake Pearson en andere kampen hebben exacte regels voor voertuigen, branden en faciliteiten. Bevestig de geselecteerde locatie voor aankomst en neem water mee dat geschikt is voor een eenvoudige alpine nacht.
Arthur's Pass-dorp
Gebruik het dorp als wandelbasis en bezoek het DOC-centrum voor actueel routeadvies. Alpenroutes variëren van korte wandelingen door de vallei tot serieus bergbeklimmen, en namen alleen laten het verschil niet zien.
Kea is intelligent en destructief als het om onbeheerde spullen gaat. Voer ze nooit, zet losse voorwerpen vast en bescherm rubber of blootliggende onderdelen zonder de vogels te schaden.
Otira naar de kust
Daal voorzichtig af via het viaduct en steile hellingen, gebruik een lagere versnelling in plaats van te remmen. IJs, wind en zware voertuigen kunnen het karakter van de weg snel veranderen.
Bereik Hokitika of Greymouth voor het donker wordt voor een volledige reset. Als de pas sluit, wacht dan of gebruik een goed gepland alternatief in plaats van te zoeken naar een niet-afgesloten sluiproute.
The highest of the three alpine crossings
At 920 metres, Arthur's Pass is the highest and most weather-affected of the main alpine road crossings. The Otira Gorge section on the western side is steep with a viaduct, and snow, ice and high wind close it regularly in winter.
Check the NZTA status before you leave, carry chains in winter, and treat a closure as a reason to reroute rather than wait. The Lewis Pass and Haast Pass alternatives are both long detours.
Kea will damage your vehicle
The kea at Arthur's Pass and Otira are intelligent, curious and destructive, and they will strip rubber seals, windscreen wipers, roof racks and anything soft on a parked vehicle. This is not a small risk; it is the normal outcome of leaving a van unattended in the car parks.
Never feed them, because human food is what has drawn them to car parks and roads where they are killed. Pack away anything loose, and expect them to open a bag you thought was secure.
The walks are short and steep
Devils Punchbowl Falls is an hour return and mostly steps. Avalanche Peak is a serious alpine day with genuine exposure and no shelter, and it should not be attempted in poor weather or without proper gear despite being a signposted track from the village.
Castle Hill, on the eastern approach, is an easy walk through limestone formations and works well as a break on the drive. It is also a significant site for Ngāi Tahu, so keep to the tracks and treat it accordingly.
Village services are minimal
Arthur's Pass village has a small store, a cafe and limited fuel, and it is not a place to rely on for a full restock. Fill up in Springfield on the eastern side or Kumara on the western side, and carry food for the crossing.
The DOC campsites near the village are basic and can be very cold, sitting at altitude even in summer. Bring warmer bedding than the Canterbury Plains would suggest.
The TranzAlpine as an alternative
The TranzAlpine train follows roughly the same corridor between Christchurch and Greymouth and is widely rated one of the best rail journeys anywhere. It works as a return day trip from Christchurch without a vehicle, or as a way to see the pass in weather that makes driving unpleasant.
If you are driving, the viewpoints at the Otira Viaduct lookout and the Bealey Valley give you the scale of the pass without a long walk. Both have parking and both are places where kea will investigate your vehicle.
Coming from the east, Castle Hill and the Cave Stream Scenic Reserve break up the drive. Cave Stream is a genuine cave walk-through requiring a torch, warm clothing and care with water levels, and it should not be attempted after rain.
Where to break the crossing
Arthur's Pass village is the obvious stop but it is small, cold and often full. Springfield on the eastern side and Kumara or Hokitika on the western side both have more options and better services.
If the pass is closed or the forecast is poor, the Lewis Pass to the north is the alternative crossing and a good drive in its own right, with hot pools at Maruia along the way.
