Bevande economiche come spesa discrezionale. Tagliare un giro spesso protegge un'attività utile o un campeggio migliore in seguito.
Coffee is a daily line, not an occasional one
New Zealand takes coffee seriously and the standard in small towns is genuinely high, which is precisely why it becomes a budget item. Two flat whites a day for two people is a substantial weekly amount, and it accumulates without ever feeling like a decision.
A stovetop or aeropress in the van covers the morning cup for a fraction of the cost and leaves the cafe stop as something chosen rather than automatic. Most travellers who do this end up drinking better coffee, not worse.
Buying wine and beer sensibly
Supermarkets sell beer and wine but not spirits, which are restricted to licensed bottle stores. Wine is the clear value proposition here: local wine at supermarket prices is very good, and the regions worth buying from are the ones you are driving through.
Cellar door tastings frequently carry a fee that is refunded against a purchase. Buying a bottle at the vineyard is rarely cheaper than the supermarket, but it is the only way to get the small-production wines that never reach a shelf.
Drinking and the driving day
New Zealand's adult limit is 250 micrograms per litre of breath or 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, and it is zero for drivers under twenty. Enforcement is active and checkpoints are common, including on rural roads and in the middle of the day.
The only safe plan on a road trip is to separate drinking from driving completely: stay where you are drinking, use a designated driver, or drink at the end of the day once the vehicle is parked for the night. Never treat a conversion table as an allowance.
Water is the one to get right
Tap water is safe and excellent across almost all of New Zealand, and buying bottled water is close to pure waste. Carry refillable bottles and fill them at any potable tap in a town, campground or public facility.
In the backcountry the position reverses: treat any water from a stream, tank or untreated supply, because giardia is present. The rule is simple enough to remember as town water yes, wild water treat.
Where to buy what
Alcohol licensing here splits the two: wine and beer are on supermarket shelves while spirits are not. Opening hours for alcohol sales are regulated and vary by district, and some areas restrict sales on particular days, so do not assume a late purchase is possible.
Craft beer is well established and most regions have local breweries worth trying at the source. Taprooms usually offer tasting flights, which is a cheaper way to work out what you like than buying by the bottle.
Buying wine directly from a cellar door is rarely cheaper than a supermarket, but it is the only way to get small-production bottles that never reach a shelf. If price is the priority, buy the region's wine at the supermarket in that region.
