Lyttelton e il porto interno sono adatti a un primo giorno tranquillo, mentre Akaroa costituisce la base più forte per la penisola esterna. Lascia Christchurch prima del traffico del fine settimana e aspettati ciclisti su strade strette.

Little River è l'ultima facile sosta prima della strada in vetta. Vento forte, nebbia e traffico di bestiame possono rendere impegnativa una salita modesta in un camper con i bordi alti.

Base Akaroa

Parcheggia il veicolo ed esplora Akaroa a piedi o con una gita al porto. Gli operatori della fauna selvatica marina seguono orari diversi a seconda delle condizioni del mare, quindi conserva una passeggiata a terra come riserva.

Campeggiare solo nei siti autorizzati attorno al porto e alle baie. Le restrizioni comunali, la proprietà privata e gli accessi ristretti eliminano molti luoghi che sembrano possibili su un'immagine satellitare.

Baie esterne

Okains Bay e altre strade esterne presentano pendenze ripide e spazio di svolta limitato. Conferma l'idoneità del veicolo e l'accesso al campeggio prima di scendere, perché fare retromarcia con un grosso camion in salita non è un piano di riserva.

Ritorna prima del traffico della tarda domenica o aggiungi un'altra notte. Una breve distanza geografica non garantisce un rapido viaggio attraverso la penisola.

The peninsula roads are steep and narrow

Banks Peninsula is an eroded volcano and the roads reflect that: steep gradients, tight hairpins and narrow shelf sections, particularly on the routes to Okains Bay, Le Bons Bay and over the Summit Road. They are sealed but demanding in a large vehicle.

The Summit Road is the scenic option and considerably slower than the direct route to Akaroa via Little River. Take the highway out and the Summit Road back if you want both without doubling the driving time.

Akaroa and the Hector's dolphins

Akaroa Harbour is home to Hector's dolphins, the smallest and one of the rarest marine dolphins in the world, and the harbour cruises are among the more reliable wildlife encounters in the country. They are also weather-dependent and book out when cruise ships are in port.

Check whether a cruise ship is scheduled before planning your day. On those days the village is extremely busy and the harbour trips fill with ship passengers.

The bays are better than the town

Okains Bay, Le Bons Bay and Pigeon Bay are quieter than Akaroa, have basic campgrounds, and give you the peninsula the way it is worth experiencing. Okains Bay also has a well-regarded Māori and colonial museum that is worth the stop.

Facilities in the bays are limited and there is no supermarket outside Akaroa. Restock in Christchurch or Akaroa before heading over the hill to a bay for the night.

An easy weekend from Christchurch

The whole peninsula is within ninety minutes of Christchurch, which makes it the standard local weekend and means the campgrounds fill on Friday evenings in summer and over long weekends. Booking ahead matters more than the short distance suggests.

It also works well as the first or last stop of a South Island trip, since it is close enough to the airport to fit either side of a flight without a long drive.

Lyttelton and the harbour side

Lyttelton, through the road tunnel from Christchurch, has recovered from the earthquakes into a good small port town with a Saturday market and a working harbour. The Bridle Path over the hill is a solid hour's walk with views over both the city and the harbour.

Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour on the southern side of Lyttelton Harbour are quieter than the Akaroa side and reachable by ferry from Lyttelton as a foot passenger, which avoids the winding road entirely.

The Port Hills between the city and the harbour have extensive walking and mountain biking, and the Summit Road along them gives the overview of the whole peninsula before you commit to driving down into it.

Getting there and the tunnel

The Lyttelton road tunnel is the quick way to the harbour and is closed to vehicles carrying certain goods, with height limits that catch some campervans. The Evans Pass road over the hill is the alternative.

From Christchurch the whole peninsula is within ninety minutes, which makes it the standard local weekend and means Friday evening arrivals compete for sites.
