What you can drive on and for how long
You may drive on a current overseas licence for up to twelve months from your date of arrival, provided the licence is valid, you have not been disqualified, and you drive only the vehicle classes it covers. After twelve months you must convert to a New Zealand licence.
The licence must be in English or accompanied by an accurate translation, or an International Driving Permit. Carry the original licence at all times; an IDP supports it and does not replace it.
Vehicle class matters for campervans
A standard car licence covers vehicles up to 6,000 kg gross laden weight in New Zealand, which is more generous than several other countries and covers most rental campervans. Larger motorhomes may fall outside it, and your home licence class is what determines the equivalence.
Rental companies apply their own age and licence conditions on top of the law, frequently requiring a minimum age and a licence held for a minimum period. Permission from a rental company does not override licensing law, and licensing law does not override the rental terms.
Restrictions carried from your home licence
Any condition on your original licence applies here: corrective lenses, automatic transmission only, an alcohol interlock, or a restricted class. Driving outside those conditions is driving unlicensed, with the insurance consequences that follow.
A restricted or probationary licence from another country generally carries its restrictions with it. If you are on a graduated licence at home, check what that means before assuming you can drive freely here.
Insurance and the excess
Third party injury is covered for everyone by ACC regardless of fault, which is unusual and means you cannot sue for personal injury from a crash. Vehicle damage is not covered by that, and rental excess amounts here are frequently high.
Read what the excess reduction actually covers, because windscreen, tyres, undercarriage, water damage and single-vehicle accidents are commonly excluded even from reduced-excess products. Those are also the most likely things to happen on New Zealand roads.
Converting to a New Zealand licence
After twelve months you must convert. Drivers from a list of recognised countries can convert without sitting theory or practical tests, while others must pass both. The list changes, so check the current position rather than relying on secondhand information.
Conversion requires proof of identity, your overseas licence, an eyesight check and a fee, and is handled through a licensing agent. Allow time, because the process is not instant and driving on an expired entitlement is an offence.
If you are staying long term and your country is not recognised, start early. Booking a practical test can take several weeks in the main centres, and the wait is longer again over summer.
Renting with an overseas licence
Rental companies impose their own conditions beyond the law: a minimum age, a licence held for a minimum period, and sometimes a young-driver surcharge. Some decline licences from particular countries or require an International Driving Permit regardless.
Confirm these when booking rather than at the counter. Arriving at a depot and being refused the vehicle is a genuinely difficult problem to solve at an airport.
