The Glenorchy road is the attraction
The 45 kilometres from Queenstown along the lake is one of the great drives in the country, with a series of signed viewpoints that are all worth stopping at. Bennett's Bluff in particular deserves more than a slow drive past.
It is also narrow with tight corners and considerable cyclist and tourist traffic. Allow well over an hour each way with stops, and take particular care in a large vehicle at the pull-offs, which are small.
Camping near Queenstown is constrained
Queenstown Lakes District enforces freedom camping restrictions strictly, with defined zones, certification requirements and early morning patrols. This is not a district where an unmarked lay-by is a reasonable gamble, and infringements here are common.
The DOC sites at Twelve Mile Delta and Moke Lake are the practical options close to town and fill early in summer. Both are worth arriving at in the early afternoon rather than at dusk.
Paradise and the Dart Valley
Beyond Glenorchy the road turns to gravel and continues towards Paradise and the Dart. It is passable in a normal vehicle in good conditions but includes fords that become impassable after rain, and many rental agreements prohibit it.
Check your agreement and the conditions before going, and turn around at any ford where you cannot see the bottom. The scenery is genuinely exceptional and it is not worth a recovery bill or worse.
Doing Queenstown without the adrenaline budget
The town is built around paid adventure activities and it is easy to spend several hundred dollars a day. It is equally possible to have an excellent few days on the Queenstown Hill and Ben Lomond walks, the lakefront, the Gardens and a swim, none of which cost anything.
If you want one paid activity, the Shotover jet and the gondola are the most reliably weather-independent. Skydiving and paragliding cancel frequently, so book them early in your stay.
Walks from Glenorchy
The Routeburn Track starts near Glenorchy and the first section to Routeburn Flats makes an excellent day walk without needing hut bookings. The full crossing is a Great Walk requiring booking well in advance and transport at both ends.
Lake Sylvan and the Rees-Dart valley tracks give quieter options with easier access, and the Glenorchy Walkway around the lagoon is flat, short and has the best views of the head of the lake for minimal effort.
The Routeburn road and the valley roads beyond Glenorchy are gravel and subject to closure and flooding. Check DOC alerts and your rental agreement, and be aware that the Routeburn car park fills early in summer.
Weather and the lake
Lake Wakatipu generates its own wind and the afternoon breeze up the lake is reliable enough to plan around. Mornings are usually calmer, which matters for kayaking, photography and anything on the water.
Winter brings the ski fields and a completely different town, with the Crown Range requiring chains and Glenorchy road conditions worth checking before setting out.
